Career Specialties
Andrea Tunarosa's research interests lie at the crossroads of culture and innovation, both within and across organizations. She seeks to understand how the particularities of time and place shape what actors imagine and construe as novel and possible.
Professional and Community Activities
Tunarosa is a qualitative researcher interested in examining the interplay between culture and innovative action, especially in situations where finding a solution seems technically impossible or shifting demand patterns seems economically unfeasible. She approaches this theme inductively through studies that rely on multiple methods and sources of data (observations, interviews, archival materials) to uncover the mechanisms at play, in a variety of contexts.
In her dissertation, for example, she conducted an historical ethnography (Vaughan, 2004) of the emergence and evolution of the specialty coffee segment in the U.S. to examine how actors operating in a mature and eroding field find ways to assemble opportunities for entrepreneurial action. Building from a wealth of data, Tunarosa traced the actions of a particular group within the field—roasters—and asked how, when, and why different sets of roasters engaged in entrepreneurial action aimed at changing the cultural associations evoked by coffee consumption.Ìý
Tunarosa is currently a member of the OMT and MOC divisions at the Academy of Management and a member of the European Group for Organizational Studies (EGOS).
