Career Specialties

Denis Rey specializes in international relations and Latin America. His past research, published in such outlets as International Area Studies Review, Global Environmental Politics and Social Science Quarterly, examines how political institutions and policy outcomes intersect.

Professional and Community Activities

Rey helped establish and co-directs the Center for José Martí Studies Affiliate (CJMSA), a formal academic affiliation between Ïã¸ÛÁùºÏ²Ê and El Centro de Estudios Martianos, in Havana, Cuba. He edits Boletin Martiano, the center's academic newsletter, and oversees the Preserving Voices Project, a newspaper recovery effort that seeks to bring to life the stories and voices of the revolutionary Cuban émigré communities of Florida and New York of the late 19th century.

Through the CJMSA, Rey has received numerous grants and has organized two National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) Summer Institute for College Professors, the first in 2019 and more recently in 2023. He has also organized several conferences, including the international conference, Martí in Tampa, in 2016.

His current research has led him to Spanish and Cuban archives in search of these elusive newspapers in hopes of analyzing their content and gaining a better understanding of these immigrant lives. He is amid two book projects, one a content analysis of these artifacts and the other an edited volume of their impact on the formation of Cuban identity and nationhood.

Honors and Awards

Rey was the recipient of the 2019-2020 College of Social Science, Mathematics and Education's Award for Outstanding Scholarship and Research.
