Career Specialties

Mark Putnam’s specializes in academic writing for both native and non-native speakers of English as well as methods of Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL) for students completing the TESOL Certificate. He is also the director of the Saunders Writing Center, which serves both graduate and undergraduate students from across Ïã¸ÛÁùºÏ²Ê. He is active in research and as a conference presenter in the areas of second language teaching and learning, writing center pedagogy and administration, and teaching academic writing. In addition, he publishes in the field of literary translation.

Professional and Community Activities

Putnam has published three books in the area of poetry translation. His first,ÌýÚltimo Cuerpo de Campanas (The Last Toll of the Bells)Ìý(2006), presents a collection of Rafael Montesinos’ poems translated from Spanish into English. This was written along with Lola Hidalgo Calle. A second book, with Lola Hidalgo Calle, entitledÌýA Study of Twenty-First Century Andalusian PoetryÌý(2016) introduces seven 21st century Spanish women poets, Juana Castro, Rosa Diaz, Paloma Fernández Gomá, María Rosal, María del Valle Rubio, Pilar Sanabria and María Sanz, from the region of Andalucía, Spain, and includes representative poems from each poet in Spanish and translated into English. Most recently, with Hidalgo-Calle, he has published a book entitledÌýMore Andalusian Women Poets: The Artistry of Southern SpainÌý(2017). The text presents seven additional 21st century Spanish women poets, Matilde Cabello, Araceli Franco, Inés María Guzmán, María del Carmen Guzmán, Isabel Pérez Montalbán, Balbina Prior and Ana Patricia Santaella from the region of Andalucía, Spain, and includes representative poems from each poet in Spanish and translated into English.

Putnam is a member of Teachers of English to Speakers of Other Languages, National Council of Teachers of English and College Composition and Communication. His second language is Spanish.
