Career Specialties
Andrew Grant's research interests are in the social and political dynamics of global development, particularly in Asia. He is also interested in cartographic design and the politics of mapmaking.
Professional and Community Activities
Andrew Grant is a political geographer with a thematic interest in cities, borders and geopolitics and regional interest in China, Tibet and Central Asia. He published his first book, Concrete Plateau: Urban Tibetans and the Chinese Civilizing Machine, with Cornell University Press in 2022.
Broadly, Grant's research contributes to discussions about the role of urbanization, borders and inter-state competition in the politics of marginalized groups.ÌýHis published papers have covered topics including ethnic identity expression on social media, rural-to-urban migration amid state-led urbanization, complications between soft power and security at the Sino-Kazakh border and the territorial politics of China’s Belt and Road Initiative cartography. His primary research methods are qualitative methods including participant observation, interviews and textual analysis.
